With all the bad news these days, it' nice to finally have some good news to talk about. While tigers remain critically endangered, news out of India gives hope that they may finally be rebounding.
In 2006, there were a little over 1,400 tigers remaining in the wild. In the last count for 2018-2019, the count has increased by fifty percent to 2,967 which by the World Wildlife Fund accounts for seventy percent of all the wild tigers in Asia.
To date, over 28,000 square miles has been set aside in over 50 reserves. This protected territory is allowing the tigers to breed and be safe from poachers. 17 of these reserves are at capacity and approximately one third of tiger sightings are out side of preserves. This could be problematic as that means an increased likelihood of tigers and humans encountering each other.
The plan is to try to relocate the tigers in these areas to reserves that are under populated so the tigers' comeback continue safely for everyone.
