On Friday, the Illinois Department of Public Health placed Sangamon County, along with ten other counties, on the warning list fo COVID-19 as the county is showing an increase in two significant areas for tracking the disease.

Sangamon County is now reporting 70 new cases per 100,000 population. The goal is to have 50 or less to indicate the pandemic is coming under control. Also, the county is showing an increase in the number of people going to the emergency room with the disease- including teens and adults in their twenties- a demographic that has long been considered low risk.

Other counties on the list include Cass, Gallatin, Jackson, Jo Daviess, Johnson, Perry, Randolph, Saline, St. Clair, and White.

The IDPH is continuing to urge people to correctly wear their masks, completely covering the nose and mouth, frequently washing their hands, to maintain social distancing of a minimum of 6 feet, and to cooperate with contact tracing efforts.

1,941 new cases of the coronavirus were reported on Friday for the state, and the positivity rate for tests has increased to 3.9%.

But, it’s not all bad news. Adams, Peoria, and LaSalle have all been removed from the warning list.

Though placement on the warning list does not automatically mean rolling back to an earlier phase, Sangamon County Public Health Director Gail O’Neill told the SJR if the metrics continue to climb, stricter measures may be put in place to slow the spread.

To date, Sangamon County has reported a total of 969 COVID-19 with a death toll of 34.
