They thought it was an innocent play on words. However, many people were not amused, but Obed and Issac’s Microaggression Session IPA, which debuted late month.
A microaggression is defined as “a comment or action that subtly and often unconsciously or unintentionally expresses a prejudiced attitude toward a member of a marginalized group.” It is now only listed as Micro Session IPA.
While Jay Shanle, corporate administrator for Conn’s, says the company intended to offend anyone, he did admit that the name that was designed to describe the Ale as “aggressively hopped” was tone-deaf. Additionally, the listing has been removed from Obed’s tap list, menus, website, and social media postings.
In the future, names for beers will be decided by a committee.
The official apology reads in part: “We know the intent was not malicious or deliberate, however, harm was still done. For that, we truly and sincerely apologize. That name was insensitive and not in line with our views at Conn’s Hospitality Group.”
