We are slightly less than two weeks away from when Springfield teachers are due back in their classrooms on August 20, and the majority have concerns,
On Monday the Springfield School Board on a 3-4 vote voted to start the year with a hybrid/blended model with some kids in the class room on August 31 and some remote learning from home.
According to Springfield Education Association (SEA) President Aaron Graves, about 73% of Springfield teachers would like to see the school year start with remote learning- about a 10% increase from just two weeks ago.
The increase is likely a result of people's opinion about in person teaching changes as COVID rates change- and currently Sangamon County is seeing a spike.
As recently as last Saturday, out of a panel of 11 medical experts advised, 9 of them advised against starting the school year in the hybrid model.
However, start date of August 31 for students is not set in stone. School board president Scott McFarland said they would only open the schools if it is safe to do so and that Sangangamon county remains at Phase 4 of the Restore Illinois plan.
