District 186 Eases COVID Metrics To Get Kids Back In School

The earliest students in the Springfield school district can return to the classroom is October 27 for hybrid learning. However, for that to happen, four, specific coronavirus metrics must be met. While the numbers in all four categories are rising, only one is outside the acceptable range.

With the number of cases per 100,000 rising this week to 92, the highest number since early September, the District 186 School Board voted 4-3 to raise the acceptable range to 100 cases per 100,000 from 50. The revised metric means the current caseload is within the acceptable range for the students to return to school.

Board member J. Michael Zimmers was the lone "no" vote, saying the 100 caseload is outside the Illinois Department of Public Health's recommendation.

Earlier on Monday, the school board was presented with a petition signed by 620 parents, students, teachers, and community members, asking for students to be allowed to return to the classrooms.

If the schools do open in a few weeks, parents still have the option of staying with online learning.
