It may have taken three and a half hours, but the District 186 school board has reached a decision for when the new school year will start.
In a split decision by the board, teachers will report to school on August 20th; students will report for class on August 31st- one week later than initially scheduled with one caveat. School board president Scott McFarland said they would only open the schools if it is safe to do so and that Sangangamon county remains at Phase 4 of the Restore Illinois plan.
The decision comes as Sangamon county is reporting spikes in COVID-19 cases and posting record numbers of confirmed cases last Sunday and Wednesday.
District Superintendent Jennifer Gill told the SJR that a little over 10,000 of the district's students have signed up for the new school year- with almost half, 4,888, opting for remote only classes. Slightly more than 2,500 students have yet to register.
