City's Homeless Will Have To Seek Shelter At Lincoln Library At Night

You may have seen their tents popping up outside the Warming Center on East Monroe, but the City of Springfield is telling the homeless people who have been living there they have to move.

The City released its statement:

“We were notified of tents being placed around the cooling center, which is not permissible. In June, we designated the City’s Lincoln Library as a place where those without shelter could rest at night because of the security we could provide. We have asked those who placed tents to move over to the library in the evening.”

For those seeking shelter, the move is not ideal. It means that they will now be sleeping on concrete. It also puts those who need shelter further away from the services they regularly use- such as showers, porta-potties, easy access to the bread line, and a place to cool down and escape the summer heat.

The City is permitting those you need shelter to seek it at the Lincoln Library from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. The News Channel 20 is reporting that the City is also looking for a longer-term solution in partnership with the Heartland Continuum of Care in recognition of the impact that COVID-19 has had on the homeless community.
