People started lining up two and a half hours ahead of time on Sunday at Café Moxo, located at 411 East Adams St. in downtown Springfield.

Starting at 3 pm, owners Mark and Shawna Forinash, along with Café Moxo general manager Brandon Hughes gave out 500 meals to people in need. By 3:20, all the meals were gone.

Forinash spent over $2,500 to put all the lunches together – no small feat for a restaurant whose business is off 60% from last year due to the pandemic.

As much as he is doing for people in need, Forinash told the SJR that he feels “terrible that I can’t do a thousand of them. I look back, and I say, should I have saved more money or should I have done this differently. At some point, I have to be able center myself and say to myself, ‘You know what? I’m doing everything I can possibly do’”.

Café Moxo remains open for curbside, take out, and outdoor dining.
