Before You Treat Your Pup To A Thanksgiving Feast, Make Sure These Things Are NOT On the Menu

Those big expectant eyes. The wagging tail. The quivering lip and dancing front paws. Your dog is excited for Thanksgiving dinner as you are. However, there are some items that you should never feed your dog.

Seasoned turkey. Poultry seasoning often has garlic and onion powder in it. Those two seasonings are a major no-no for dogs. It is OK for your dog to have unseasoned turkey – and just like people – white meat is better than dark. Also, skip the skin. Lastly, no bones- they can splinter and cause severe damage to the digestive tract on the way through.

As mentioned before, anything with garlic, onions, chives, and scallions are bad for dogs. They can cause issues with their red blood cells, so foods like stuffing, gravy, my mom’s AMAZING scalloped corn- anything with those ingredients should be kept away from pets.

Raisins, grapes, and currents. These pop up in a lot of desserts and even some stuffings and sweetbreads. They can also cause liver failure in dogs and some breeds of cats.

Sweets of any kind - Obviously, too many sweets can lead to obesity, and it takes a lot fewer calories for pets to get there than their humans. However, a more immediate concern is pancreatitis – which can be caused by too much sugar. Skip the sugar-free stuff also. The common sugar substitute called xylitol can make their blood sugar plummet and cause liver failure. And it can literally take your pet from you within hours.

If you want to do something special for your pup- get them a treat specially designed for them. Some of my favorite places to get special treats includes:

Just want to make sure everyone has a safe, happy, and tasty Thanksgiving!!
