Animal Protective League (APL) was bursting at it seems. The non-profit animal shelter behind the north end of the Illinois State Fairgrounds and taken in animals from two different hoarding situation in as many weeks.

Animals from these types of situations often provide challenging care. Most will need some level of medical and/or dental treatments. They will need grooming, and they will need to be taught socialization skills. Often that makes it difficult to find them forever homes.

But APL put out the call on their Facebook page and people, LOTS of people have opened their hearts and their homes to dogs and cats coming out of those horrific conditions.

More than a third of the 54 dogs and cats APL stepped up to take in have either been adopted or have been pre-adopted. Pre-adoption allows the future owner to take the animal into their home on a foster basis while APL continues to provide medical care and covers those costs. Animals in a foster situation are less stressed and heal more quickly. Additionally, by allowing animals healthy enough to be placed into foster care, APL has more open kennels to help save more dogs and cats.

Currently, 15 of the dogs and cats taken in from the hoarding cases are in foster homes with APL volunteers for medical treatment and socialization. Once they have been cleared by the veterinarian, they will be placed up for adoption or pre-adoption

If you are interested in adopting a dog or cat, visit the APL website at apl-shelter.org to view animals currently up for adoption and fill out an application to get pre-approved. APL is open 7 days a week by appointment at 1001 Taintor Rd.
